Vegetarian Department

By having this Vegetarian Department we hope to help the good people who are striving to live without animal flesh, and to present the matter in such a way as to convert those who eat meat because their forefathers and the races of carnivora which preceded our present generation were addicted to the slaughter of God's creatures for support of their own lives. It has always seemed to us, all mercy and fellowship aside, that man was not intended to eat meat. Meat is the conversion of Nature's beautiful, life into animal flesh. (In domestic animals it is generally the the conversion of filth into flesh.) This flesh we attempt to put on our bones as our flesh. Does it look plausible to you that this is efficient? You must reconvert this matter into your flesh. The vibrations of the filthy hog, of the frightened sheep, of the mad bull—all these you put within you. Of course it is possible to overcome these vibrations, but you do you think it is efficient to spend all your energy reducing these vibrations to your vibration: How will you ever get anywhere? the cry of the age is efficiency! Efficiency means conservation. Whenever you can do as well on something which is easier to handle, is it not foolish to continue in the old way? Why strap and extra load to your back, in climbing the hill of Spiritual Attainment?

In future articles we shall give some examples to prove our statements. All examples shall be gathered from physiologists of reputation, and shall tend to put two and two together, where abandoned without conclusions.

the Food Store is still at the old stand. Mrs. Walmsley has been very busy during the past week entertaining the many good people who accepted her invitation to "come and learn." She is glad to show any one about the vegetarian foods, and certainly can make dishes that would tempt even the most settled cannibal from his fleshpots.

On the night of the Guild Party the Food Store will furnish the refreshments, and you shall have an opportunity to taste the excellent Cereal Coffee, Millennium Bouillon, Nut Sandwiches, etc. You are invited to come and partake. The "eats" are free.

The animal diet is not a demand of the healthy man, but more properly the craving of some form of habit or degeneracy. There are whole races of men of sturdy and enduring strength subsisting and thriving on the products of the field and garden, to the exclusion of flesh food. The work and patience of the rice-eating Oriental rival the endurance of such as live chiefly on animal food.

Meat eaters are not able to boast of advantages that do not also attend those whose food is a vegetable diet. In the selection of edible material, taste and means to purchase it play a most important part. Tbe change from butchers' food to vegetable and fruit food is rapidly approaching, and explains the improvement in the health a longevity of those who properly employ it. The potato is the chief staple of food, and has reached the

enormous yield of 128,000,000 tons a year for the world—Elmer Lee, M. D., in "Health Culture."

Thanksgiving Day Will Soon Be Here

Why not make it entirely a day of joy and blessedness by tearing out the slaughter of the innocent animals and fowl for food?

Are we not more thankful to our God of love when we know that we have not destroyed any of his precious life to satisfy our false appetites?

There are so many delicious, nourishing vegetables, fruits and nuts that one may eat—and they are really man's natural food—that no one need ever suffer the least pang of hunger after quitting the use of flesh as a food.

Tens of thousands of people right here in the United States are living entirely upon the humane diet. They are strong and well, and are doing their work right along with the meat eaters. They find many advantages in the vegetarian diet other than the clear conscience which comes of not having been the means of causing suffering and loss of life to dumb creatures. They find they have fewer ills to contend with, and they do not tire as soon as meat eaters, with physical and mental work.

For the benefit of those of our friends who are taking up the vegetarian diet we have prepared a Unity Vegetarian Cook Book, which contains many suggestions on vegetarian cooking and also about four hundred excellent recipes. This book will be sent to any address for one dollar. Send orders to Unity Tract Society, 913 Tracy Avenue, Kansas City, Mo.

Guiltless of offense, God's creatures range the air,
Or take their pastime in tbe spacious field.
There they are privileged; and he that hunts
Disturbs the economy of Nature's realm,
Who, when she formed, designed them an abode.
They are all—the meanest things that are—
As free to live, and to enjoy that life,
As God was free to form them at the first,
Who, in his sovereign wisdom, made them all
Ye, therefore, who love mercy, teach your sons
To love it too.white space—Cowper.

I do not believe in eating meat. At one time I ate it as most people do, but after a couple of seasons' living on a private car, side-tracked in stations where the mournful sound of cattle huddled together like sardines, came to my ear, and the sight of hundreds of them suffering for food and water, and the knowledge that they had to travel hundreds of miles in this condition without rest or nourishment—disgusted me, and I have found myself better in health and strength since I gave it up.—Lillian Russel.

See "Invitation" on page 5. It tells about the party.

Success is in the silences,
Though fame is in the song.
