Silent Word
Last Sunday morning our Speaker in giving the central thought for concentration said:
"Our prayer this morning shall be for the realization of that which we are. 'Be ye perfect even as your Father in heaven is perfect.' This perfection is in the heaven of our being. This heaven is accessible to everyone of us when we put ourselves in the heavenly state of mind. We do this by putting our conscious thought in heaven.
"'I am perfect with the perfection of my heavenly Father; I am perfect with thy perfection.'"
A regular monthly meeting of the Board of Directors of the Unity Society of Practical Christianity will be held Monday, September 27th. All applications for membership in the Society received before 8 o'clock Monday evening will be acted upon at this meeting. Plans for the new Buildings will also be discussed and steps for putting the Building under way will doubtless be taken.
Unity Guild is ready to receive filling for the two Sunshine barrels. Dolls, toys, games, and books will be gratefully received. The contents of these barrels will be given at Christmas time to the children's homes to help make a bright day for the little folks.
Meat Kills More People than Alcohol
Sir James Barr, senior physician of the Liverpool Royal Infirmary, goes behind the Metchnikoff bacillus in his search for the cause of old age. The bacillus may have all the evil effects claimed by Metchnikoff, but it would have no chance if the victim did not provide a basis by habitual excess in nitrogenous foods. It is the meat habit which lies at the root of the arterial degenerations that bring about old age. Dr. Barr thinks that excessive nitrogenous eating kills more people than alcohol. "After witnessing one of the great temperance advocates dine, I stated that he would not live three years, and he was dead within two."
The arterial degeneration in question makes the arteries rigid instead of elastic. Mind therefore, becomes rigid at about fifty or sixty years of age. These facts may perhaps do more to induce us to reform than even the recently unveiled Chicago slaughterhouse horrors. But probably they will only make the majority take even more of the thousand "uric acid solvents" with which the drug stores are crammed. Instead, why not eat less meat and drink more water? For men or women confined to office or home, and taking little exercise, the eating of meat three times a day is nothing short of crime.—From Practical Ideals.
