Picture of Lowell Page Fillmore The four Fillmores actively advocated the practice of vegetarianism during their lifetimes beginning with Charles Fillmore's original article, "As To Meat Eating" published in the October, 1903 issue of Unity Magazine. Lowell added the New Thought Diet section to Unity Magazine in 1906 and there were two special vegetarian issues of the magazine in February, 1911 and June, 1915. John Fillmore was editor of The Vegetarian column, which was added to Weekly Unity beginning with the October 25, 1911 issue. The Vegetarian column continued until 1931. Lowell Fillmore was North American Vice-President of the International Vegetarian Union from 1953-55 and 1960-67. Besides the written articles and publications, the Fillmores started the Unity Inn, the Unity Pure Food Co., and the Unity Farm as practical manifestations of vegetarianism in the early 20th century.
